True Shooting Percentage
Also: TS% · True Shooting
A shooting efficiency metric that weights 2-pointers, 3-pointers, and free throws into a single percentage.
Definition
True shooting percentage captures overall scoring efficiency by accounting for the different point values of 2s, 3s, and free throws. Unlike field goal percentage, TS% rewards 3-point accuracy and free throw generation.
Formula
TS% = PTS / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA))
Example
A TS% of 60% is elite; 55% is above average; 50% is average; 45% or lower is inefficient.
Why it matters for research
Two players can have the same field goal percentage but very different TS%. A guard who shoots 45% from the field but takes 8 threes a game has a higher TS% than one who shoots 45% from the field with no 3-point volume.
