Draft Strategy
Not every training camp update deserves a ranking change. This signal ladder separates viral highlights from evidence that genuinely changes fantasy volume, availability and projections.
Training camp produces more fantasy football information than almost any other part of the NFL calendar. It also produces some of the least useful information.
A receiver makes a one-handed catch. A coach says a running back looks explosive. A rookie takes several snaps with the starters. A quarterback throws three interceptions during a red-zone period. Within hours, clips circulate, rankings change, and average draft position begins moving.
The problem is not that these reports are false. The problem is that most of them do not change the variables that create fantasy points.
A real projection change requires new information about at least one of five things:
Everything else is supporting information.
That distinction matters because the 2026 draft market is already reacting aggressively to incomplete camp reports. Malik Nabers’ Underdog ADP moved from 37.6 to 31.4 in seven days after videos showed him moving well during individual drills. At the same time, Nabers said there was still “no target date” for his full return from ACL and meniscus surgery. The practice footage was encouraging, but it did not establish his Week 1 availability, full-contact readiness, or expected early-season snap rate. entral training camp mistake: treating positive information as complete information.
The signal ladder below ranks NFL training camp updates from content that should barely affect a projection to evidence that can force a complete rewrite.
A highlight clip can confirm that an NFL player is talented. It usually cannot tell us how often that player will be on the field.
Training camp videos are selected precisely because something unusual happened. They do not show the previous four routes, the coverage structure, which defensive unit was on the field, whether the quarterback was allowed to be hit, or whether the receiver was working with the starting offense.
The Allen Robinson example remains one of the cleanest warnings. Robinson’s first Rams training camp in 2022 produced a steady stream of contested catches and red-zone highlights. His draft price reached approximately the WR20 range despite a poor final season in Chicago. Robinson then finished 2022 with 33 receptions, 339 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. The highlights demonstrated that he could still make individual catches. They did not establish that he would command enough targets to support his price. a player is in the “best shape of his life,” looks faster, or is ahead of schedule belong on the same rung. Arriving at camp in good condition is the expectation, not a new source of fantasy volume. Positive rehabilitation language is useful only when it is followed by observable progress through individual drills, team periods, padded work and unrestricted participation. response:** No change.
A highlight can justify watching the next practice. It should not independently add targets, carries or games played to a projection.
The next rung contains observations that describe what happened without establishing that it will continue.
A quarterback throwing interceptions during one practice is not evidence that his regular-season efficiency has collapsed. Training camp is where quarterbacks test throws, install concepts and work against a defense that knows the offense. Drops are similarly weak evidence unless they become persistent enough to threaten playing time.
Ja’Marr Chase’s 2021 camp is the obvious counterexample to practice-result panic. Reports about drops helped push his redraft price to roughly WR27 and the middle of the sixth round on some high-stakes boards. Chase then opened his career with five catches for 101 yards and a touchdown before finishing his rookie season as an elite fantasy receiver. The reports correctly identified that he had dropped passes. They incorrectly turned a temporary practice problem into a season-long projection. praise has the same limitation. “He has had a great offseason,” “we want to get him involved,” and “he can help us in different ways” reveal almost nothing about expected volume.
Even apparently specific comments can be empty. A coach discussing a “package” for a player does not tell us whether that package contains four plays or forty. Creative usage only matters when it produces routes, touches or scoring opportunities.
Current reports that A.J. Brown is approximately 90 percent comfortable with New England’s offense are reassuring, but they do not independently alter his route share, target projection or touchdown expectation. Learning the offense is a necessary condition for production, not an additional source of production. response:** Usually no change.
A small confidence adjustment may be reasonable when a concern is resolved, but the median projection should remain stable.
“Working with the starters” sounds more important than it often is.
NFL offenses do not use one permanent first-team group. Personnel changes by situation. A running back may work with the starters during an early-down period while another back controls third downs and the two-minute offense. A receiver may line up with the first unit because a veteran is resting. A tight end may start in a two-tight-end formation but run fewer routes than the team’s slot receiver.
The first question should therefore be: Why was the player receiving those reps?
San Francisco opened its 2026 camp with Jordan James reportedly operating as the second running back behind Christian McCaffrey. That was worth recording, but it was not enough to project James as McCaffrey’s definitive backup. The report came early in camp, other backs remained in the competition, and James was subsequently added to the injury list with a rib issue. ort told us which player happened to be second in one early rotation. It did not establish who would handle passing downs, goal-line work or a starter-level workload if McCaffrey missed time.
First-team reps become more useful when they repeat across several practices, survive the arrival of full pads and continue after veterans return. Until then, they should change the probability of a player earning a role, not assume that the role has already been won.
Projection response: Change the range of outcomes, not necessarily the median.
For a late-round player, repeated starter exposure may increase the probability of a usable role. It should not automatically create a full starter’s workload in the projection.
This is where training camp information begins to deserve meaningful weight.
The important word is not “repeated.” It is “high-value.”
Fantasy projections should respond when a player consistently earns work in situations that produce targets, receptions and touchdowns:
A report that a running back received eight carries is less informative than confirmation that he handled every third-down snap with the first-team offense. A report that a receiver caught a touchdown is less informative than evidence that he ran nearly every route with the starters during multiple team periods.
The mathematical reason is straightforward.
Suppose repeated camp usage causes a projection to add two targets per game to a receiver. At a 65 percent catch rate and 11 yards per reception, those two targets produce approximately 1.3 receptions and 14.3 receiving yards per game.
That equals roughly:
Across 17 games, the full-PPR difference is approximately 46 fantasy points.
By comparison, adding three carries per game at 4.2 yards per carry produces only 1.26 fantasy points per game before touchdowns are considered. That is why reports about passing-down work can be more important than reports about who received the first handoff of practice.
This rung should still be treated carefully. Teams experiment during camp. A player can receive a temporary role while the coaching staff evaluates him. The signal becomes stronger when the same usage appears in padded practices, joint practices and preseason deployment.
Projection response: A small or moderate median adjustment.
At this level, the news can alter projected routes, targets, carries or high-value opportunities. The size of the move should reflect how long the usage has persisted and whether the player has realistic competition.
Injury updates deserve their own signal ladder because “practicing” can describe several very different stages of recovery.
From weakest to strongest, the stages generally look like this:
Moving from one stage to the next can change the probability that a player will be ready for Week 1. It does not automatically restore the player’s full-season workload.
Tucker Kraft is a useful current example. Green Bay activated him from the physically unable to perform list on July 31, approximately eight and a half months after his ACL surgery. That was meaningful progress because players on PUP cannot participate in on-field coaching work. However, the Packers initially limited Kraft to individual drills and walkthroughs rather than team periods. esponse is to reduce the probability of Kraft missing the beginning of the season. It is not yet to assume unrestricted Week 1 routes, full snap volume or complete recovery of his pre-injury efficiency.
Malik Nabers belongs in a similar category. Participating in individual work during the opening practices was a real improvement from missing spring work. The Giants then gave him a planned rest day, and Nabers acknowledged that he did not have a firm target date for his full return. That means the information improved his availability outlook without resolving it. l represents the negative version of this signal. After participating in only three camp practices, Pearsall missed work because of swelling around the PCL in his right knee. San Francisco publicly acknowledged concern about the flare-up. FantasyPros subsequently moved him down six ranking spots to No. 107, while live Underdog tracking listed him at an ADP of 101.6 with further downward movement expected. practice or dropped pass, swelling that removes a player from practice changes his availability distribution. That should affect projected games, early-season snaps or both.
Projection response: Adjust expected games and early-season workload.
The projection change should reflect the specific stage of the rehabilitation, not simply whether the player appeared on a practice field.
The strongest usage evidence appears when coaches have multiple opportunities to change the rotation and choose not to.
A player taking first-team snaps on the opening day is an experiment. A player continuing to handle third downs, red-zone work and two-minute situations after two weeks of padded practices is much closer to a role.
Joint practices can be particularly useful because teams often give starters more competitive work there than in preseason games. The quality of opposition is higher, the periods are scripted around specific situations, and coaches can repeat a play after a mistake.
Preseason box scores remain less important than deployment. A backup receiver posting 90 yards against third-string defenders may not have earned a regular-season role. A receiver playing every first-team snap during a short opening drive, including a third down and red-zone snap, may have provided more valuable information with zero catches.

This evidence changes the projection because it begins answering the real question: not whether the player is performing well, but how the team intends to use him.
Projection response: Meaningful change to snaps, routes, touches and target share.
This is the stage at which a player can legitimately move between projection tiers.
The top of the ladder contains developments that change the structure of the depth chart.
These include:
Actions matter more than adjectives.
A team can praise two running backs. It cannot give both of them every third-down snap. A coach can say a receiver will be involved. The team’s decision to trade or release the player ahead of him creates far more tangible opportunity.
Quarterback decisions also affect more than the quarterbacks themselves. Naming a starter can change projected pass volume, sack rate, scramble volume, target distribution and touchdown expectations for an entire offense. A quarterback merely taking the first snap of an alternating camp practice does not provide the same information.
Daniel Jones being fully cleared for 11-on-11 work after an Achilles injury is an important availability update. It becomes a full ecosystem-changing signal only when his role in the Colts’ quarterback competition is resolved. Health and depth-chart position are separate projection inputs. response:** Rewrite the relevant portion of the projection.
When a team action clearly changes games played, starter status or available opportunity, preserving the old projection is more dangerous than reacting.
Training camp reporting has a built-in optimism problem.
Teams want players confident. Coaches want competition. Team media accounts want engaging content. Players want to describe their offseason positively. Beat writers naturally report the most visible plays.
That does not make positive reporting dishonest. It means positive reporting is abundant and often expected.
Negative developments are rarer. A player being unable to practice, repeatedly losing high-value reps, requiring a medical examination or being publicly criticized for an issue tied to playing time can be more informative than several days of praise.
The key is repetition and consequence.
One negative coach quote should not erase a player’s projection. Repeated comments about pass protection followed by removal from third-down work should. One drop is noise. A recurring technique issue that causes a receiver to lose first-team routes is evidence.
The question is not whether the report sounds positive or negative. It is whether the report changes what the coaching staff is doing.
Average draft position tells us how the market has responded. It does not tell us whether the response was correct.
That difference is visible in the current Nabers market. FantasyPros noted that his consensus ranking had fallen roughly 14 spots from late June as managers waited for a clean medical clearance. Once individual-drill footage appeared, his Underdog ADP rose 6.2 spots in one week. Neither move came with confirmation that he would handle a normal Week 1 workload. rst priced uncertainty more aggressively. It then priced visible progress more aggressively.
A drafter evaluating the information should separate three questions:
Did the player’s outlook improve?
Yes. Individual work was better than no field work.
Was the uncertainty resolved?
No. There was still no firm return date or full-team participation.
Did the price move more than the projection should have moved?
That depends on how much Week 1 availability and early-season workload were already discounted.
De’Zhaun Stribling provides another example. His Underdog ADP moved from 172.1 to 157.7 over seven days as injuries created a clearer path to San Francisco’s WR2 role. The opportunity story is legitimate, but the price moved before Stribling had established a regular-season route share. make him a bad selection at the new price. It means the projection should distinguish between an improved path and a secured role.
Before moving a player in your rankings, run the update through six questions.
A detailed observation from an independent beat reporter who attended practice carries more context than a cropped team highlight or an aggregation account repeating another post.
Look for whether the reporter identified the personnel group, practice period, quarterback, defense and reason a veteran was absent.
One practice creates a note. Three or four practices can create a trend.
Repetition matters most when the team has changed conditions by adding pads, introducing contact, returning veterans or facing another team.
Do not count touches without examining their type.
Third-down routes, two-minute snaps, goal-line carries and work with the starting quarterback are more relevant than raw practice touches.
Name the input explicitly.
Did expected games played increase? Did route participation rise? Did target share change? Did goal-line opportunity improve? Did a competitor disappear?
When no input can be identified, the ranking probably should not move.
Receiving work matters more in PPR than standard scoring. A quarterback winning a starting job matters more in superflex. A volatile deep receiver may gain more value in best ball than managed redraft.
The same camp report can produce different projection changes across formats.
An accurate report can still become unhelpful once the price absorbs more upside than the role supports.
Track both the player’s projection and the player’s cost. Moving from pick 170 to pick 155 is different from moving from pick 90 to pick 55.
As of August 1, these examples illustrate how differently current reports should be treated.
Individual work and visible movement improve the probability that Nabers can contribute early. His lack of a firm target date and absence from unrestricted team work preserve meaningful uncertainty.
Signal level: Medical progress, not full clearance.
Projection treatment: Slightly improve availability probability. Do not yet assume a normal early-season snap rate.
PCL swelling after only three camp practices is connected directly to availability. Public concern from the team increases the importance of the report.
Signal level: Medical setback.
Projection treatment: Reduce expected early-season availability or snaps until a clearer timeline arrives.
Injuries ahead of Stribling have improved his access to meaningful reps, and the market has reacted. The next evidence needed is repeated first-team route participation once practices become more competitive.
Signal level: Opportunity increase.
Projection treatment: Increase the probability of earning a role, but do not project full WR2 volume yet.
Activation allows Kraft to resume coached field work, which improves his Week 1 outlook. Individual drills and walkthroughs remain several stages below unrestricted team participation.
Signal level: Meaningful rehabilitation milestone.
Projection treatment: Reduce expected missed time slightly. Preserve workload and efficiency uncertainty.
Opening camp as San Francisco’s second running back was worth monitoring. An early injury and the lack of repeated high-value usage prevent the report from establishing him as the clear contingency option.
Signal level: Single-practice depth indication.
Projection treatment: No meaningful change yet.
The goal is not to ignore training camp. That would discard some of the best information fantasy managers receive before the season.
The goal is to react in proportion to the evidence.
A spectacular catch can move a player onto a watch list. Repeated first-team routes can change the probability of a role. High-value work during padded practices can alter projected volume. A confirmed starter decision, injury timeline or roster transaction can force an entirely new projection.
Most mistakes happen when those stages are collapsed into one.
Fantasy managers do not need to be the first people to react to every update. They need to identify which reports change playing time, opportunity or availability before the market fully understands the difference.
The better question is not, “Was this good news?”
It is, “Which projection input changed, by how much, and has the draft price already moved further than the evidence?”
The strongest reports involve confirmed availability, repeated high-value usage, starter decisions and roster moves. Third-down, two-minute and red-zone deployment usually matters more than highlights or generic praise.
A single report usually should not. First-team reps become useful when they repeat across padded practices and continue after injured or resting veterans return.
Preseason deployment is generally more useful than the box score. Focus on who plays with the starters, runs routes on first-team dropbacks and receives high-value work.
Early depth charts are often produced before competitions are complete and may reflect seniority rather than expected usage. Actual practice and preseason deployment usually provide better information. d fantasy managers react to injury updates?
Track the player’s stage of participation. Individual drills, team periods, padded work and unrestricted practice represent materially different levels of readiness.
