NBA Stats Glossary
Pace
Also: Pace Factor · Possessions per 48
The number of possessions a team uses per 48 minutes. Higher pace means more possessions, which inflates counting stats.
Definition
Pace captures how fast a team plays on a per-minute basis. League-average pace has drifted between 96 and 102 possessions per 48 minutes in recent seasons. Faster teams generate more shot attempts, more scoring opportunities, and higher totals.
Formula
Pace = 48 × ((Team Possessions + Opp Possessions) / (2 × (Team Min / 5)))
Example
A game between two top-5 pace teams may have 230+ combined possessions. A slow-pace matchup can be under 195. That's a 15%+ difference in scoring opportunity.
Why it matters for research
Pace is a major driver of totals (O/U) and volume-based player props. A player's per-game points will be higher on faster teams even with the same per-possession efficiency.
